Why grow gourds In The garden ? When a tree is best.

I have decided to get creative with where to plant gourds .
I have a hallow tree that has a deep foot and half depth so I filled it with potting soil and have started my gourds in the tree .I am hopping they will climb up and vine around the tree limb .

As you can see they have just begune to Sprout

This way the fruit will dangle down and dry nicely for winter crafts for the children
And it will add a air of mystery around Halloween LOL
A little History
Gourds are fascinating. The Aztecs fashioned them into musical instruments and in Haiti, it was the official currency.
The Celts celebrate their New Year on November 1st and believe that on the night before the New Year, October 31st, the portal between the world of the living and that of the dead is opened, allowing the dead to return to earth. They call this night "Samhain." November 1st also has a macabre significance as it is the start of winter and the "season of death" during which many people would die from the scarcity of food. During Samhain, the Celts paint scary faces on gourds to scare away the returning spirits and paint their own faces as well. It is also believed that faeries dress as beggars during Samhain and go door to door asking for handouts. Those who refuse are believed to be in for some mischief from the faeries.
The Romans conquer the Celts. The festival of Samhain falls on the same days as the Roman celebration of the harvest, Pomona. With the two cultures living together, the two festivals merge into one, with the theme of apples and the harvest becoming part of the annual festival of Samhain.
Unable to get the people to stop their pagan celebrations on October 31st and November 1st, Pope Boniface IV designates November 1 All Saints' Day. On this day saints and martyrs are to be honored. This move does not eliminate the pagan rituals as hoped. Instead, the people simply celebrate both festivals at once.
1500s: By this time, Samhain and All Saints' day are mingled so well that they are one and the same. It has a new name as well: All Hallows' Day. The night before All Hallows' Day is called All Hallows' Evening. The villagers call it Hallow Evening, or Hallowe'en.
They make great shakers .noise makeers you can paint them and add all sorts of decorations to them .

The Rottweiler,Jeff Row

Jeff row had not had his tail cropped nor any of his puppy shots Jeff row is a Rottweiler
A very sweet little guy.Jeff row came to live with us last part of April he weighted 6 lbs

And he chewed on every thing including my computer head set and now I have no speakers he chewed them in half lol He loves to roll up in my PJ's after i get dressed in the mornings

Vern built him a new house to spend his sunny afternoons in the fenced in yard.
Jeff row the new puppy is weighing in at 27 lbs and is 11 weeks old now.

The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund, is a "medium to large size, stalwart dog" breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs
The Rottweiler has a massive, powerful body. Muscular and athletic, it has a broad head and rounded forehead. The muzzle is well-developed with a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark with an expression of goodwill and loyalty. The ears are triangular, carried forward, and its nose is wide and black. The lips are black and inside the mouth it is dark-colored. The tail is customarily docked. Often born with rear dewclaws, these are usually removed when the tail is docked. The coat is short, hard and thick. It is black with brown markings on the cheeks and muzzle, paws and legs. A red color with brown markings also exists. There is a deficiency in the hair gene making the coloring a lighter red.

Tempermeny of the Breed.

The Rottie is calm, trainable, courageous, and devoted to their owner and family. They have a reliable temperament. Protective, he will defend his family fiercely. These are strong fighters that seem immune to pain. Serious, steady and confident. Firm and careful training is essential for this breed, otherwise you may end up with a very powerful and overly aggressive dog. Yet they can, with proper handling, also be loyal, loving and very rewarding companions. They require owners who can handle their massive size. The Rottie is a natural guard dog with a mellow temperament. They are highly intelligent and have proven their worth beyond question in police, military, and customs work over many centuries. Because of their size, training should begin fairly young - while the dog is still small. This breed needs a lot of leadership, companionship and socialization to be truly happy. The objective in training this dog is to achieve a pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in their pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined. You and all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. That is the only way your relationship can be a success. When the Rottweiler receives consistent leadership and is trained, it will be a good playmate for the children. It will accept cats, other dogs, and other household pets, as long as the dog has been socialized well and have owners who assert their authority over the dog. Friends and relatives of the family are normally enthusiastically welcomed. Strangers to whom the dog senses bad intentions from can get no further than the sidewalk

Veterans wall memorial Seneca Kansas

Seneca has just added a new veterans wall memorial I went out to see it today it is gorgeous
They have done a very fine job .it is not completed as of yet .
But what they have built is great I went out to look for my fathers and my sons name black but they had not gotten them added to it.
They did have Vernon’s Uncle Franks McGehee plaque added
I was happy to have seen that one added

What the wall stands for is the men and women who has so bravely stood up for our country some gave their lives .Memorial Day ceremony sought to remember those who have died and honor and remember those now serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
"We've tried to (focus on) that ever since we've been in this new Iraq war situation,"
United States lost more than 618,000 soldiers in the Civil War and a half-million soldiers in the world wars. The country quickly is approaching 5,000 lost in Afghanistan and Iraq,
"No, freedom is not free,"
Memorial Day means honoring all the veterans and especially the people who lost their lives for the great country.

Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato,

Do Upside Down Tomatoes Work?

I am experimenting with the upside down tomato this is new to me so I am a little skeptical .they are growing ,
this is working it is a new Concept in gardening they say Doubles Your Tomatoes and Keeps Plants Healthy
The benifits No Staking - Since the tomatoes are hanging from the planter, you have no need to stake them, or bother with any other types of support other than the planter hanger.
Soil Borne Pests - Since the tomato plants don't rest on the ground, you don't have nearly the problems with slugs and other soil borne pests.
Soil Borne Disease - SInce you are likely to replenish the soil annually with a planter, problems with diseases lurking in the potting soil are significantly lower.
Improved Air Circulation - Since the tomato plants are suspended in the air, you get a lot better air circulation. This results in improved pollination and higher yields, and fewer problems with rot

Weeds - Since the planter has very little exposed soil, there are almost no problems with weeds and no need for weeding.

Location - The beauty of container gardening is that you can do it almost everywhere. You can hang one of these planters on your apartment or condo balcony, or you can hang it on your patio so you don't have to travel to the garden to get fresh tomatoes for your salad.

Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato, it has been a couple of weeks since I planted them and to day they have their first fruit on them Tuesday, May 26, 2009
